Project saves energy

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Several midstate school districts are participating in a demonstration project to save energy being coordinated by PPL Electric Utilities, which has joined with Lutron Electronics Co. Inc. of Coopersburg to install a mix of energy-efficient lighting technologies.

Participating schools include Camp Hill High School, the McGowan Building in Carlisle Area School District, Eyer Middle School in East Pennsboro Area School District and Middletown Area High School.

PPL offered school districts the opportunity to run a demonstration project in two classrooms or in a gymnasium.

The demonstration includes replacing less-efficient light bulbs and fixtures with high-efficiency versions. Classroom systems will include sensors that automatically adjust lighting based on available daylight, ensuring that lights don't draw more power than needed.

Additional sensors will detect when classrooms are occupied and turn lights on or off as appropriate. Teachers will be able to control lighting. Dan Miller, The Patriot- News
